At War in Italy 1943-1945 recounts the experiences of British and Allied personnel behind enemy lines. They include escaped prisoners of war, downed airmen, secret agents, and special forces.
In September 1943 the Allies invaded southern Italy. The Germans occupied the rest of the country and brought back the Fascist dictator, Benito Mussolini. During 20 months of savage warfare on the Italian mainland, the Allies engaged in secret missions by land, sea and air, and conducted guerrilla warfare alongside the partisans. Italy was finally liberated on 2 May 1945.
At War in Italy 1943-1945 is based on eyewitness accounts, top-secret wartime reports and international research. The book is the fifth on wartime Italy by the Anglo-Italian historian Malcolm Tudor. His father was a soldier with the 8th Army in Italy and his mother and grandparents were amongst the rebels against Nazi and Fascist rule.
